Asian Cricket Awards winner Haseeb Hameed receives England call up
Winner of the Talk Home Mobile Professional Young Player of the year award for the second year in a row prepares to tour with England.
Haseeb Hameed made it two in a row when he collected the Young Player of the Year trophy at the Asian Cricket Awards on Friday 23rd September.
Hameed, 19, has just received his first call up for England to tour Bangladesh. If selected to partner skipper Alastair Cook in opening England batting he will be the youngest Test player since 1997, when Ben Hollioake made his debut against Australia.
The glamorous night at the Kia Oval capped off a busy week for the batsman as he has been playing in the County Championship for Lancashire.
Looking forward to playing with the team, Hameed received a special message from Cook but he still can’t believe that he has been picked.
“With the recognition comes responsibility”, he said. “I have to act as a role model, make sure I don’t change as a person and be my own man.”
By making such an impact at a young age he has become an inspiration. He gave some advice for those who wish to follow in his footsteps.
He added: “To young cricketers I’d just say don’t set limits, give your all and be open to learning and back yourself. Don’t ever look back."
Breaking records seems to be a trend for the youngster.
This season he took the title from Mike Atherton and became the youngest Lancashire player to pass 1000 runs in the Championship.
The batsman became the first to score two centuries in each innings of a Roses match - coming against Yorkshire.
Scoring a total of four hundreds in this season, Hameed has become the first teenager to do this.
Continuing with the hundreds, he is the youngest player to hit two in an English first-class game.
