2017 Vitality Netball Superleague preview: Hertfordshire Mavericks
The 2017 Vitality Netball Superleague promises to be bigger and better than ever with new players, new coaches and new teams!
Ten sides will battle it out to be crowned champions when the league gets underway on Friday 17th February.
Here Sports Gazette gives you the lowdown on Hertfordshire Mavericks.
Director of Netball: Robyn Broughton. Assistant Coaches: Kat Ratnapala and Camilla Buchanan
Home Venue: Hertfordshire Sports Village
Squad: Halimat Adio, Summer Artman, Sophie Drakeford-Lewis, Michelle Drayne, Zara Everitt, Keshia Grant, Sophie Hankin, Vicklyn Joseph, Lindsay Keable, Rose Morgan-Smith, Ashleigh Neal, Razia Quashie
Two-time champions Hertfordshire Mavericks are consistent contenders, having never finished outside the top four.
New Zealand icon Robyn Broughton and Kat Ratnapala, who coached last season’s champions Surrey, bring a wealth of experience and success to the side.
Broughton also has a positive track record of nurturing up-and-coming athletes to help them meet their potential.
With this in mind, keep an eye on Summer Artman: energetic, enthusiastic and committed, it’s no surprise that she’s a full-time member of the England Netball programme.
However the Mavericks have seen several key departures from last year’s squad and will have to adjust to playing without 2016 Sky Sports Vitality Superleague Player of the Year Sammy Wallace (NSW Swifts) and dynamic defender Layla Guscoth (Team Bath).
But Mavs have secured the services of former Surrey Storm shooter Ashleigh Neal, who will provide fresh and fiery attacking impetus.
First fixture: vs. Team Northumbria (H, Friday 17th February at 19:30)
Regular season winner odds: 8/1 (Sky Bet)
