Manchester Thunder’s Kerry Almond on Superleague bronze: "Nailed that"
Manchester Thunder’s Kerry Almond was delighted with lessons learnt from their previous defeat to Bath after the two-time champions secured third place in the 2017 Vitality Netball Superleague.
They led from the off, weathering the Blue and Yellows’ pressure as Bath closed to within one goal in the third quarter, and secured a 56-48 victory.
The goal keeper was pleased with the marked improvement in performance against the five-time champions, who had beaten them 57-45 at the Thunderdome in Round 17.
Speaking to Sports Gazette, Almond said: “I think from the game we had against them two weeks ago, we knew what we had to improve on and I think we really nailed that.
“It was really intense but I think when you know Bath as well as we do, you know no matter what the score, they’re always going to come back at you.
“We said beforehand that we had to have a good start because the past three or four weeks we’ve had a terrible start.
“At half-time, after they came back at us in the second quarter, Karen (Greig), said just nail what we do well.”
Thunder have had a somewhat bumpy season, starting the season as a new-look side after a series of key departures ahead of the 2017 campaign.
But Almond was particularly delighted with the opportunities handed to and performances delivered by several young Thunder talents and is excited for the potential of the club.
She said: “I think we’ve blooded a lot of young players in this season – Amy Clinton’s got some really good court time, Gabs Marshall in her first proper season is a starting seven player.
“We’ve learnt what our youth can do and I think that’ll stand us in good stead for the future.”
Almond saved her final word for the ever-present, ever-noisy and ever-brilliant Thunder fans though.
She said: “They’re absolutely fantastic!
“We’ve said all season long that they’re the best fans.
“They’re the loudest and that crazy bunch are just insane – they’re all you can hear throughout the match and it was just such a good feeling.”
