Wasps Netball’s Hannah Reid on Superleague title: “A fairytale!”
Captain Hannah Reid expects more to come from Wasps Netball after the new franchise enjoyed a dream debut season.
Tamsin Greenway’s team stung Loughborough Lightning in a dramatic Grand Final to win 55-51 at the Barclaycard Arena.
The team were visibly elated, and understandably so, as Reid produced an incredible steal in the closing minute to reclaim possession and secure Wasps the title of 2017 Superleague champions.
Speaking to Sports Gazette, Reid said: “It’s a bit of a fairytale to be honest!
“We had a really up-and-down season but benefited coming off some really good games coming into the end of the season and just managed to put it all together.
“Full credit to Loughborough – they were brilliant opposition.
“It was a great advertisement for the sport.
“We’re just absolutely delighted to come out with the trophy.”
Despite being a new franchise, Wasps boast a wealth of Superleague experience both in terms of players and coaching staff.
And Reid believes that this did help to an extent against Lightning.
She said: “I think there’s definitely some experience that plays into it but we knew coming into this that Loughborough were the in-form team.
“They’d been super consistent all year so we knew that we had our work cut out.
“Some of us here have got quite a lot of finals experience and that certainly helped.
“We know that it doesn’t always go to plan on the day but ultimately it’s just what happens on the court.
“They played a brilliant game and we just managed to come out on top.”
Wasps were backed by an army of overjoyed and vocal travelling fans with chants of “Allez, Allez, Allez” spurring them onto victory.
And Reid stressed how impressed she’d been by the support the club had received in their inaugural season.
She said: “It was absolutely brilliant!
“The Wasps fans were so loud – we could hear them all through the court.
“It was great support and we’ve had it all season.
“To think that this is a new fanbase, that we didn’t have at the start of the year is just so nice to see.”
The club have been high achievers at all levels in 2017 and Reid is excited about Wasps’ potential as they continue to grow and develop.
She said: “We’ve had success across all the age groups this year.
“Our 21s went unbeaten so hopefully there’s a lot to look forward to next year.”
For the time being though, Reid will be savouring her third Superleague title – or so she thinks!
She said: “I think I’ll enjoy this one first but I seem to say that every year and then funnily enough end up there again.
“There are a few people here that I’ve managed to lift the trophy with a couple of times.
“We’ll definitely enjoy this one and then see where next season goes!”
