Calum Johnson talks life outside British Triathlon’s World Class Programme, national titles and a new start in running.

By anyone’s standards Calum Johnson had a highly successful career as a triathlete. A European Triathlon Cup winner in Weert in 2017, top ten placings in multiple Triathlon World Cups. A consistent performer for GB on the international stage.

It was a sport that gave him so much and one he is reluctant to cast in a negative light. But speaking to Calum it is clear the federation he has so consistently represented has failed him.

Calum talks to the Sports Gazette on life outside the World Class Programme, competing against others with a wealth of resources that he simply didn’t have access to. On travelling to events with the pressure of knowing financial survival depended on each performance.

A singular purpose for Calum Johnson

Triathlon’s loss has been athletics’ gain.

The English National Cross-Country Champion from 2020, Johnson now finds himself as one of the country’s most talented runners.

He recalls his greatest triumph, winning that national cross title, one he had grown up dreaming about and discusses his plans for a future in athletics.

2022 will see Calum transition to the marathon, hoping to run in Manchester and it is a discipline he feels could make the most of his talents.

Calum’s is a story which is not yet finished and in that all can have a great deal of optimism. It is also one which provides plenty of lessons. In focusing on the few British triathlon risk losing out on some of their best.
