Play was briefly halted following an injury to Brunel’s GD, but St Mary’s managed to maintain a narrow lead heading into the final quarter.

Tempers flared late in the game as a fight broke out on court and in the crowd, causing a delay with just minutes remaining. It wasn’t the first heated moment of the day, as tensions boiled over in this tightly contested match.”

“The fourth and final quarter punctuated a fantastic morning out in Teddington for St Mary’s.

The 15th and 16th St Mary’s goals were scored in quick succession, as the guests struggled to contain their aggressive hosts.

A great run by Hunter culminated in a Miss, before the Stingrays secure a colossal 17th goal early in the day.

A widely celebrated 18th goal for the Stingrays was followed a by a time-out to allow a change in the home side’s goal.

Once the action was back underway, the Simmies continued with their relentless attack.

The visitors searched for another consolation goal in the dying moments of the match, but could not find their way to a third against the dominant Simmies.

At the end of the third quarter, St Mary’s extend their lead to take commanding control of the contest heading into the final quarter. Here’s the full update with our Lacrosse experts, Emma Seligman and Beth McCowen:

“The third quarter saw St Mary’s reach double digits, scoring their 10th of the morning at speed. A scrappy clearance by the visitors denied the Stingrays their 11th, and more action was clearly on the horizon.

Brunel pushed for a third, but the Simmies defence was rigorous. Simmies midfielder Noah Hunter came off the bench to score their 12th as an exciting third quarter progressed.

A brave save by St Mary’s goalkeeper Leo Hunter-Brown denied Brunel a third, as the Stingrays’ dominance persisted.

First year Chris King sent the Simmies’ 13th goal flashing into the back of the net mere moments later, to the delight of his teammates.

King showed no hesitation in shooting for the second, a clever shot finding its way beyond the line inside of the final two minutes of the third quarter.

A long-range shot by Don Aston was over the bar, before the referee’s whistle blew.”

“The second quarter was off to another strong start for the Simmies, their already healthy lead extended rapidly to 7-0.

Brunel’s search for a goal of their own finally came to fruition after a spell in possession, as they put one past the St Mary’s stronghold.

Some great set play from the hosts saw them close to another netting, but the attempt was wide before Rixon too was off-target.

A dramatic eighth goal arose for the Stingrays as they continued their thrilling Varsity campaign.

The inevitable ninth was just around the corner, and a break in play followed after a heavy challenge on a Simmies midfielder heading into half-time.”

09:36 – Men’s Lacrosse

Emma Seligman and Beth McCowen are down at Teddington Lock ahead of the Men’s Lacrosse against Brunel and here is the update from the first quarter of action:

“The Stingrays started strong down at Teddington lock, with number five finding the opener with an overhand shot less than two minutes in. Some close calls followed, with the Simmies dominating possession and looking to assert their dominance early on.
The home side’s second arrived before long, flashing beyond the Brunel goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

A third for St Mary’s was not far behind, a powerful shot by fresher Chris King firing over the goal line. The fourth was almost instantaneous, a skilful execution put away by Will Rixon, who impressed spectators with his no-look shot.

After a brief Brunel counter effort, the Simmies had a narrow miss and one Brunel defender saw his stick snap almost in half before the hosts offer him a less flashy replacement. The Stingrays continued to threaten in the final third, often beating their opponents to the ball.

With three minutes of the first quarter remaining, King had a close range shot denied by the keeper. Noah Hunter was quick to take his turn, before Rixon added another to make the score 6-0 to St Mary’s.”
