West London Varsity: St Mary’s secure basketball victory in last 4 seconds

March 26, 2025

St. Mary secured a hard-fought victory over Brunel at West London Varsity, winning by two points, 57-55. After last year’s away defeat, the rival match was filled with intense action, momentum shifts, and standout performances for the Simmies’ final game of the year after a rough season.

First Half

After an hour and 15 delay, St Mary’s won the tip-off, taking an early lead, fuelled by strong shooting and defensive intensity.

The starting five included: John Davies, Peter Asante, Ruben Eyene, Miles Goodrudge, and Thomas Howson.

Point Guard, Peter Asante, set the tone with his numerous three-pointers in the first quarter, with St Mary’s putting pressure on defence, leaving Brunel unable to create chances.

In the last two seconds of the first quarter, Eyene went for the lay-up but was fouled, winning both his free throws. Going into the second quarter, 18-15.

The second quarter saw scoring runs and a defensive stand from Brunel bringing the game to a close margin before half-time. After a three-pointer by Brunel in the 46th second of the second quarter, Simmies’ Coach called the second time out of the quarter with a 26-26 tie. But post time-out with 18 seconds on the clock, St Mary’s made a three leading 29-26 before the half.

Second Half

Coming out of the break, Brunel made adjustments, focusing on perimeter defence, fast breaks, utilising rebounds.

Irah Carey contributed to the Simmies in the fight both on offense and defence.

Going into the fourth and final quarter, St Mary’s were on the cusp of holding their lead with a score 42-36. Both teams’ five penalties caught the attention of the referees, telling the players to ‘watch their arms’.

St Mary’s looked to Asante for the threes especially after his assistance in Goodridge’s break away as he scored under the net.

In the closing minutes, and a packed gym, St Mary’s used up the shot clock leaving possession to Brunel. With 4.4 seconds left on the clock, St Mary’s coach called the last time out.

With penalties left to use, St Mary’s managed to defend against Brunel winning with a crucial turnover sealing the West London Varsity victory for St Mary’s.

The crowd erupted as the final buzzer sounded.
