Varsity battle beckons: Annas Benani gears up to lead St Mary’s against Brunel
As the West London Varsity showdown approaches, St Mary’s University rugby player Annas Benani is embracing the challenge ahead. The second-year Sports Management student is preparing to face one of his fiercest rivals, Brunel University, in a match that holds major significance for both teams.
“I’m really looking forward to Varsity,” Benani said. “Preparation started a couple of weeks ago after our last game of the season. We’ve been training hard, including an early morning session at 7:30am today — impressive numbers for a Friday morning.”
Brunel poses a significant challenge, and Benani is aware of the unpredictability that comes with such high-stakes encounters. “It’s one of those games where anything can happen on the day,” he said. “We don’t know whether we’re going to win or lose, but we prepare for both outcomes.”

Born and raised in England, Benani’s Algerian roots remain an important part of his identity. “Both my parents are from Algeria,” he said. “Rugby isn’t huge there yet, but it’s growing. The African Cup has encouraged more people to take part, especially in France.”
Benani’s own rugby journey began at a local school at the age of 15. During lockdown, he dedicated himself to skill training, steadily improving his game. His involvement with Hayes School in Bromley during sixth form helped him progress to St Mary’s University’s rugby team.
For Benani, the West London Varsity represents more than just a match — it’s a celebration of university spirit. “Varsity is massive at St Mary’s,” he said. “From the moment you join, you start building towards it. It’s a day to represent your team and sport, and to support your fellow students. Last year, we didn’t win our rugby game, but we won Varsity overall. This year, we’re determined to win both.”
Benani urged supporters to rally behind the team on match day. “We’re playing on the main campus pitch at 9am on Wednesday. Come down bright and early to cheer us on. Hopefully, we’ll beat Brunel and win Varsity again this year.”
With focused preparation and a driven squad, St Mary’s rugby team is set for a fierce contest. The stage is set for a memorable showdown as Benani and his teammates aim to reclaim victory on the pitch.
