West London Varsity: Men’s 1’s Football – St Mary’s 7-2 Brunel
The first half provided more excitement than the second and it was a fast and physical start. St Mary’s raced into a 3-0 lead as an early header from number 11, Dylan Teale, followed by a brace from number 49, Jack Johnson gave St Mary’s comfortable breathing room.
Brunel had a succession of set pieces, but failed to capitalise from them as goalkeeper Ace Prasad kept his defence organised, barking orders out to them as St Mary’s cruised at 3-0 before a temporary stoppage in play due to Ace sustaining a knock.
There would be a scare towards the end of the first half when Ace went down with a knock but quickly recovered. This seemed to interrupt St Mary’s rhythm as Brunel scored two goals in two minutes to give St Mary’s what seemed like a nervy second-half task with momentum in Brunel’s favour.
There would be no such problems. Within a couple of minutes of the second half starting, St Mary’s would score a 4th to make it 4-2 thanks to Jojo Musungu and never really looked back.
Ace made some good saves from several of their chances as they controlled the game and could’ve won by even more with chances falling to St Mary’s but they were either just out of reach or blazed over the bar.
The second half seemed to peter out for the most part until the controversial 5th goal went in as Dylan Teale grabbed his brace whilst two balls were on the pitch. The Brunel players protested, to no avail, as the goal was given and St Mary’s restored a three-goal lead.
The sixth and seventh goals came late in the game as Jamie Koroma controlled the ball from a freekick and fired it in. Captain Alex Cole added a seventh shortly before the full-time whistle was blown.
It was a commanding win for St Mary’s, who win two out of the three football matches including the women’s football down at Teddington Lock. Ultimately it was a good performance from the Twickenham based outfit, who showed Brunel firmly who the best football team at West London Varsity is.
