West London Varsity: Women’s Football – St Mary’s 6-1 Brunel
It was a game of highs and lows as St Mary’s women’s football claimed a 6-1 home victory against Brunel at West London Varsity.
The first half saw St Mary’s have a few promising attempts on goal. The most notable of these was Ellie Nitsche’s shot on goal that would float just wide of the Brunel net.
While all noble efforts, they would ultimately be in vain when the home team found themselves a point behind their opponents at halftime.
It is safe to say this was not the underdog position St Mary’s expected to find themselves in as a last minute penalty was given to Brunel following a shoulder barge.
With the penalty goal at the 45th minute not being well received, a fight broke out between the two teams before a double red card was awarded to players on either side.
As the second half commenced, St Mary’s channeled that fighting spirit into play and equalised soon after the kick off whistle. The home team went on to score another goal, cementing their place in the lead.
Brunel’s hopes of securing an away victory only worsened when a corner was capitalised on by Matilda Copley, bringing the score to 3-1.
“We’ve done really well, hopefully we can keep the win going”, St Mary’s footballer Sydney Felix told The Sports Gazette at the start of the second half.
“We’re gonna win one hundred percent”, Felix added on how the rest of the match would play out.
Indeed, Felix’s predictions were vindicated when St Mary’s scored a fourth point as Orla McComb won a penalty.
Just minutes after, Abby Delves made a run down the pitch and gave St Mary’s a fifth goal as she crossed the ball in.
A final point would be scored when St Mary’s was awarded a free kick, a fitting end to an exceptional match.
