The final whistle had blown at St Mary\u2019s and Spurs manager Antonio Conte had already disappeared down the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>From being 3-1 up, a late penalty had consigned Tottenham to a draw at Southampton, a result inciting the Italian to condemn his club <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/football\/story\/_\/id\/37637272\/antonio-conte-blasts-selfish-tottenham-players-club-ownership-draw-southampton\">in a manner rarely seen before in the Premier League<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cTottenham&#8217;s story is this &#8211; 20 years there is this owner and they never won something. Why?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they want to continue in this way, they can change the manager, a lot of managers, but the situation cannot change. Conte left the club by mutual consent on the 27<sup>th<\/sup> of March, exactly two weeks after it was announced that Rehanne Skinner had been removed from her post as the Spurs women\u2019s team manager.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a record fifth place finish in the 2021\/22 season, nine straight league defeats in 2023 forced Spurs to move in a different direction, with Skinner paying the price.<\/p>\n<p>Conte\u2019s words divided the fan base. Some fans interpreted them as the rantings of a beleaguered manager desperately trying to save face whilst others praised his honesty and frankness in a heroic final act of managerial martyrdom.<\/p>\n<p>Just over a year has passed since this now infamous outburst. The curtain has since come down on the 2023\/24 WSL and Premier League season, so what difference has a year made?<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The season of change<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Permanent options were sought in the summer of 2023, with Robert Vilahamn and Ange Postecoglou chosen to lead the women\u2019s and men\u2019s teams respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Recent years had seen a departure from the attacking style of play that fans consider a core part of Tottenham\u2019s culture, a change that Levy seemed determined to address in that summer.<\/p>\n<p>Conte had directly attacked Levy in his explosion of anger in Southampton, so the under-pressure chairman had to ensure his next move was the right one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football.london\/womens-football\/tottenham-wsl-vilahamn-levy-england-27793979\">Speaking to Football London<\/a> when he was first appointed, Vilahamn said: \u201cMy last interview was with Daniel Levy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was mainly about making sure the women&#8217;s team is something we are proud of, a team that everybody can come and watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id='Yndr_liYTQRv2keL0KmCWg' class='gie-single' href='http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1859640607' target='_blank' style='color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;'>Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'Yndr_liYTQRv2keL0KmCWg',sig:'cIMspD7vbuObV66G5ivL8aGZwggwhSB8ldjdCEkPh8Q=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1859640607',caption: false ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>Postecoglou watching the women&#8217;s team play\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tottenhamhotspur.com\/news\/2023\/july\/ange-we-want-to-be-a-team-that-wins-things-and-ultimately-entertains-our-fans\/\">In Postecoglou\u2019s first interview with the club<\/a>, he said: \u201cFootball that\u2019s exciting, that people talk about, not just the end result but also the manner in which you played your football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what is important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was clear that Levy wanted a cultural reset across the board.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about his vision for the future, Vilahamn said: \u201cWe want to be one club; we want to have one fan base.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the fans see our teams play, we want them to see one identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The front-footed philosophy has been evident in Tottenham\u2019s youth teams as well. Wayne Burnett\u2019s U-21\u2019s knocked out Chelsea in the PL2 semi-final last week, dominating the Blues in nearly every offensive metric.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The Style Council<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was clear to both Vilahamn and Postecoglou that a unified return to the \u2018Tottenham way\u2019 was integral to the club\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>The change in style was immediately apparent for both managers. In the 2023\/24 season, the men\u2019s team didn\u2019t get beyond the third round in domestic competition and were never in serious contention for the Premier League title.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s team came much closer.
