Wimbledon Beat Weymouth 3-1 in FA Cup 1st Round

Ethan Chislett scored two goals off the bench as Wimbledon progressed into the second round of the FA Cup, beating Weymouth 3-1

All the goals came in the second half as Ayoub Assal and Chislett’s brace gave the Dons a 3-0 lead, with Brad Ash scoring a consolation for Weymouth in the 77th minute.

Wimbledon play National League Chesterfield at home in the next round, giving the Dons a great chance of progressing to the 3rd round and drawing one of the country’s biggest sides.

There were 6 changes to the Wimbledon lineup from Saturday’s goalless draw at Salford, including regular starters Alex Woodyard and match-winner Chislett. 20-year-old star Assal came back into the line-up following a one-match suspension.

The Dons came into the game in good form, unbeaten in their last 5 in the league.

Despite their good form, the first half of the game was scrappy as Weymouth controlled the midfield, regularly breaking up the Dons attacking efforts.

On 22 minutes Weymouth should have scored after Keelan O’Connell’s shot was parried back into the box and fell to Tom Blair, only for him to blaze an open goal chance over the bar.

Wimbledon were forced into an early change at 27 mins as left-back Jack Currie went off injured and was replaced by Hus Biler.

Biler started well creating a chance for Harry Pell via a whipped cross on 30 mins.

Xander McBurnie clipped the top of the crossbar with a thunderous strike from 25 yards out 32 minutes in, as Weymouth continued to threaten the Wimbledon goal.

On 45 minutes Josh Davidson had arguably the best chance of the first half, as his shot forced a great block after a brilliant long-range pass from Ryley Towler.

Halftime came and little had come from the game with Weymouth looking the more likely side to score, but ultimately it was 0-0 at the break.

Jonnie Jackson must have given a rousing halftime team talk as the scrappiness ended there and the home side came flying out of the blocks in the Second half

The breakthrough came via Assal, who produced a silky finish into the bottom right corner after he was played in from a quick free kick.

Chislett then came on just before the hour mark as Wimbledon made multiple changes 57 minutes in.

The winger lit up the game, netting straight after coming on after getting on the end of a Harry Pell flick on.

Chislett then scored again after some excellent build-up play outside the 18-yard box left him one on one with the goalkeeper 63 minutes into the game, with the winger coolly slotting home into the bottom right-hand corner.

Consolation did come for Weymouth through an Ash goal, as he scored a towering header at the back post, although they were ultimately knocked out by the better side.
