The first half was largely dominated by Chesterfield, who bossed the midfield and deservedly took the lead two minutes before halftime through Armando Dobra.

Jeff King doubled the Spireites lead on 75 minutes in spectacular fashion and Wimbledon never recovered.

Chesterfield  go on to the 3rd round draw on November 28th, whilst  Wimbledon will look to pick up the pieces in the league against Grimsby.

The Dons made wholesale changes from their Papa John’s Trophy win in midweek, with most of their main starters back in.

Both teams came into the game in flying form, Chesterfield had five wins on the bounce at the time while the Dons were 10 unbeaten.

The game took a while to get going early on in the first half, but Chesterfield were soon in the ascendency.

The first chance of the game came their way in the 16th minute.

It was a lovely move from Chesterfield, dragging the dons left and right before Jamie Grimes’ cross found Josh Quigley, whose goal-bound header drew a super save from Nik Tzanev.

Chesterfield continued to fly at the Dons, this time a lovely slide rule pass from Tom Whelan sent King through , he cut inside from the right wing but pulled his left footed shot well wide.

Wimbledon’s first big chance came against the run of play.

A lobbed through ball caught Chesterfield napping and Ethan Chislett rounded the keeper but his goal-bound attempt was smuggled off the line in the 34th minute.

The Spirites took the lead two minutes before halftime, a lovely counter attack down the left side, Dobra and Quigley exchanged a series of passes before Quigley turned provider.

He pulled the ball back to the penalty spot for an unmarked Dobra to slot home. A deserved lead.

Both teams started the second half as they did the first, a very scrappy opening five minutes, which Chesterfield came out of better.

The first chance came to King but his shot fell harmlessly into the arms of Fitzsimmons in the 62nd minute.

Wimbledon were at sixes and sevens five minutes later. King again was slipped through brilliantly but his cross flashed across the six yard box and beyond two Chesterfield players.

King was a menace all game and doubled Chesterfield’s lead in splendid fashion 75 minutes in.

He received the ball on the right wing and from an obscene way out, he curled in a cross-come-shot that looped over Tzanev and into the back of the net.

The remainder of the game was all Chesterfield, they poured it on in search of a third but it never came.
