Last week players and management visited Heidedal Child & Youth Care Centre, located on the outskirts of Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Teammates Jack Crowley, Shane Daly, Max Deegan, Joe McCarthy and Scott Penny spent time with the children and care workers at the orphanage and presented the cheque for R250,000 (£12,100) to the staff.

The orphanage cares for and educates children, and the donation will support the building of a new housing unit at the centre.

The match that sealed the deal

The tourists were the first to score in the first half, but a hopeful Cheetahs attack saw the match square 7-7 at half-time.

Emerging Ireland regained the lead early in the second half with a stellar try by fullback Shane Daly and a successful conversion by Jack Crowley to set the score at 14-7.

Centre Jamie Osborne added to the score following a successful lineout, landing a beautiful try under the posts. Crowley’s conversion led to a to 21-7 final result.

The Cheetahs aimed to upset the Irish in the dying minutes, after scoring a penalty try, but this ultimately was not enough.

During the Challenge, the tourists also claimed wins over the Airlink Pumas in a tightly contested match (28-24), and a walkover win against the Windhoek Draught Griquas (54-7).
