Match Preview – AFC Wimbledon vs Newport County
Johnnie Jackson’s AFC Wimbledon will desperately want the three points against Newport County at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Boxing Day to move one step closer to a League Two playoff spot.
AFC Wimbledon drew 0-0 against Swindon Town in their last league game and then lost on penalties to Plymouth Argyle in the Football League Trophy in midweek. They are currently sitting 12th in the league table with 21 games played having secured 30 points.
Illness meant several Wimbledon players missed out on the trip to Plymouth, but Jackson is hoping they can recover in time to feature in the Boxing Day fixture.
AFC Wimbledon have got a good recent Boxing Day record with two wins from their last three matches on the day after Christmas.
Visitors Newport will have something to prove as they lost their last game at home against Doncaster Rovers, and need a win to give themselves a buffer against the relegation zone.
However, with only three wins away from home this season, Newport will find it hard going against the Dons.
With over 7,000 tickets sold already for the match at the a raucous home crowd should give Wimbledon the advantage.
With the Boxing Day fixture always a special occasion and plenty on the line at both ends of the League Two table, this should be a thrilling spectacle to start the Christmas season.
