NFL star Damar Hamlin collapses on field during Monday Night Football and remains in critical condition
Tragedy struck on Monday night in Cincinnati, Ohio during the NFL’s Monday Night Football game. Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle in the first quarter of a game between the Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Damar Hamlin, is a 24-year-old 2021 6th-round draft pick from the University of Pittsburgh. The injury occurred at 8:55pm Eastern Standard Time and Hamlin received CPR on the field before being transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center by ambulance at 9:25pm.
The league postponed the game at 10:01 pm after it was determined that neither team was prepared to continue, with the Bengals leading Buffalo 7-3 with five minutes left in the first quarter. The medical personnel rushed onto to the field following Hamlin’s tackle of Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins. After the tackle Hamlin stood up momentarily before collapsing on the field and his teammates rushed to his side.
Multiple Bills players were visibly distressed and were comforting one another as Hamlin was being attended to on the field.
The sellout crowd at Paycor Stadium stood in silence as medics worked on Hamlin on the field before he was placed in the ambulance. Both teams went back to their respective locker rooms before the league made the call that the game would not resume.
Hamlin started 14 games this season after filling in for injured first string safety Micah Hyde. He suffered a neck injury in week 2 and has been on the injured reserve list ever since. The most recent event with this magnitude was the incident involving Denmark’s Christian Eriksen at 2020 Euros, when he collapsed on the field.
Hamlin who hales from Mckees Rocks, Pennsylvania has played 30 career games with Buffalo and has been on the field for 807 plays, 3rd-most on the Bills. As of this reporting Damar Hamlin remains listed in critical condition.
