Cristiano Ronaldo fires back at critics

Cristiano Ronaldo has fired back against the critics of an explosive interview with Piers Morgan on Talk TV.

The Portuguese talisman told journalists that “I speak when I want”, at a surprise press conference in Doha this morning.

Ronaldo’s appearance was not scheduled, leading to a certain level of bafflement among the media at Portugal’s training ground.

“In my life, the best timing is always my timing. From your side it is easy to look at how we can chose timings. Sometimes you write truths, sometimes you write lies. I don’t have to think about what other people think. I speak when I want.

“The players know me really well for many years and know the type of person I am. It’s an ambitious group that is hungry and focused. So I’m sure (the interview) won’t shake the changing room’s concentration and focus.” he said.

Despite missing Portugal’s recent friendly with Nigeria, the Manchester United forward suggested he was fine.

“I’m feeling great, I’m recovered and I’m training well and ready to start the World Cup in the best way possible.

“I feel that this Portugal squad has amazing potential. I think we can win for sure, but we need to focus on the next game. So, it’s focusing in Ghana, get a win and go from there.

“We will see in the end who the best team is, but I believe Portugal is the best team in this World Cup. But we need to show it on the pitch.” he added

Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo’s United teammate, also appeared in an attempt to quash the idea that the striker’s interview is spreading discontent through the Portugal squad.

This is probably a result of the video that surfaced showing an awkward-looking handshake between the two as they arrived at training

The attacking midfielder predictably played down the idea of a rift by suggesting he was “just playing around.

“His plane was late – I asked him did you come by boat” Fernandes explained.

If there is a breakdown in the squad’s relationship this will surely slash Portugal’s chances in the tournament. This fact will not be lost on Ronaldo. Qatar 2022 will almost certainly be his last world cup as a result of his age and his declining pace, meaning the striker will be desperate to win the World Cup and cement his legacy as one of the greatest of all time.
