International Women’s Day: What does sport mean to you?

On this International Women’s Day, I wanted to showcase why sport is one of the most powerful vehicles for change and how much it means to the women within the St. Mary’s University community.

As a man, I believe that it is up to everyone, but most importantly men to support, showcase and empower women in their goals and ambitions.

Only then will we start to see equal opportunities.

Sport plays an essential part in promoting human rights. Respect, fair play and unity can bridge gaps in social, cultural and economic divides.

2022 needs to be another year for increased improvements and progress in equality. The fight for a more empathetic and fairer world should leave no one behind.

The current world is not an equal one, and strives must be taken for this to change in all parts of society.

The disappointing rate at which the stewardship of our planet enforces change needs to improve. Our best efforts are still not good enough.

There is still a huge lack of women in decisions-making roles and tables of power. For girls to be able to drive technology innovation in the future, they need the opportunity.

Even though women are still marginalised and discriminated against, we know that their involvement has brought more lasting peace agreements.

It is evident that there is a long way to way to go but some strides have been made across the world.

More girls are attending school, less girls are being forced into early arranged marriage, and laws are being reformed to advance equality.

It is an international women’s day every day and we should all act like it.

I set out to talk to women in different roles and posed one simple question, “What does sport mean to you?” and I have learnt that to a lot of women, sport is everything.

It’s an escape, a release and a way of life.

Speaking to women in a range of different roles highlighted how there are endless ways women are involved in sport.

Thank you to all of the inspiring women that took the time to sit down and share why sport means so much to them.
